Some right-headed thoughts about church website design

Here.

I quite like the idea of collapsing:

  • the 'About' page into 'New Here' and
  • the 'Ministries' page into 'What's On'.
I'm not so sure about renaming 'Services' to 'Sundays', I don't think the ambiguity is that extreme, as we are still used to the different meaning of 'services' in a religious context - 'memorial service' and so on. I also don't like the emphasis on the one day of the week that 'Sundays' gives. I'd probably just go for 'When and Where' or something like that.

Finally, does 'Contact Us' need to be a primary link in quite this way? Can't it live as a footer to the web page?

Yeah, I am for keeping 'service'. It's actually a really good word for what we do when we gather - that is, we aren't watching a performance by the lead pastor. And it has history on its side.

It's also a sneaky way to get 'worship' language into church meetings through the back door. Shhh! Don't tell your diocese...

...and he has a good "what we believe" section.

Have you seen our redesign?

Hey Laura, I have seen the redesign... I like it, although I did get a little annoyed that I couldn't find old, old sermons. I'm guessing they'll be put up eventually?

As someone who frequently has to consult organisations' websites as part of my job, it annoys me more than I can possibly express in words when an organisation doesn't have an 'about us' or 'contact details' tab prominently displayed on their homepage (in the footer is ok, better than nothing). These are very basic things that should be immediately visible on any organisation's website. Often, they're the primary reason why people look up an organisation's website in the first place.

I feel like 'new here' is possibly a little *too* clever and intuitive?

Gotta love the worship language. I make sure I use it as often as I can!

I very much agree that words like 'ministries' are meaningless to outsiders, and church sites should aim to be user-friendly to outsiders in every possible way. At Internet Evangelism Day, we have produced a church site self-assessment:
church tool
which may help.

Blessings

Yeah, Mikey, we're still in the process of uploading older stuff to the new site -- I guess I should have said it's a new site, not just a redesign! New server, new designer.
