The NIV has its flaws, but man it reads so well, so much better than the yoda language of the ESV it is.

Mikey, have you tried the Holman?
Only a little, Con, and what I've tried, I like.
Hey Mikey,
Took up an ESV a few years ago I did...took me a little to get used to it, but I do prefer it now. We actually use several translations in bible study, which we find helpful, but I reckon where there are a number of translation options for a particular greek/hebrew work the the ESV guys almost always use a different one to what's in NIV...I'm sure they did it just to be different!!
I have been thinking of giving a bible to a friend at work and I'm pretty sure I'll get her an NIV...much better for someone not used to reading bible at all I think.
Trouble is, the Holman still has sexist language in it...
ESV is not actually English.
