- When they need explaining!
- When they leave people wondering: ‘What happened next?’ or ‘Is that accurate?’
- When they clash: with your personality or the culture of the congregation. If you come across as proud, or the illustration seems in bad taste, if they don’t fit your personality, if they don’t with with the knowledge and interest of your hearers, if they are inaccurate or inauthentic.
- If they overtake the sermon: too funny, too emotional powerful, too long.
- If they include a theological distortion.
